What is the cavitation of the pump?

May 18, 2023

Cavitation in a pump is caused by the vaporization of water, which is the process by which water changes from a liquid state to a vapor state.

The vaporization of water has a certain relationship with temperature and pressure. Under a certain pressure, water begins to vaporize when the temperature rises to a certain value. If at a certain temperature, the pressure drops to a certain value, water will also vaporize, and this pressure is called the vaporization pressure of water at that temperature.

Water vaporizes when the pressure in a local area is equal to or below the pressure corresponding to the temperature of the water. When vaporization occurs, many small bubbles of steam and gas are formed. When the bubble flows from the low pressure area to the high pressure area with the water flow, the bubble bursts under the action of high pressure, and the high pressure water flows to the space occupied by the original bubble at a very high speed, forming an impact force. Under the action of water percussive pressure, the metal surface formed fatigue and was seriously damaged. Therefore, we call the formation, development and rupture of the bubble to destroy the whole process of materials, called cavitation phenomenon.
